What Hell's Kitchen is

Hell’s Kitchen is a brawler in the mould of the arcade beat-em-ups, with a battle royale twist: eight chefs are dropped into the same kitchen and the round ends when one is left standing. You pick a chef and fight the other seven at once, which means the smartest thing you can do early on is let two of them find each other first.

Each chef has their own speed, power and health, so the one you pick changes how the round should be played. A fast, light chef wants to stay on the edges and punish whoever is already hurt. A heavy chef can stand in the middle of a scrap and come out of it.

The kitchen is part of the fight. Pans, cleavers and other kitchen gear can be picked up and thrown, the islands break up the floor into lanes, and depth matters: you have to line up with somebody before a punch lands. Wins are counted and kept between rounds on your device.

How to play

  1. Pick a chef from the roster. The bars show speed, power and health.
  2. Line up with your target. Punches only land on a chef standing at the same depth on the floor, so step up or down as well as left and right.
  3. Hit, then move. Standing still in a brawl with seven other chefs is how you get hit from behind.
  4. Pick things up. Walk over kitchen gear, grab it and throw it at whoever is closest to going down.
  5. Let them fight. The computer chefs attack each other too. Arriving late to somebody else’s fight is a real strategy.

Tips

  • Depth before damage. Most missed punches are not mistimed, they are at the wrong depth.
  • Thrown gear hits hard. A cleaver across the kitchen does more than two punches.
  • Finish hurt chefs. The reward for a knockout is the same whoever did the work.
  • The last fight is the real one. Keep some health for it instead of winning every scrap on the way.

Questions

Are my wins saved?

Yes, your win count is kept in your browser on the device you play on.

How bad is the fighting?

Cartoon fighting: punches, and kitchen weapons like cleavers. There is no blood.
