What Math Cathualties is

Math Cathualties is multiplication practice with the shape of an arcade game. You pick a difficulty, which sets how many seconds you get per problem, and then answer times tables until you run out of lives. A wrong answer costs a life, and so does letting the clock run out.

Five correct answers clear a level, and the numbers grow as you climb. Levels one to three stay inside the single-digit tables, with level three concentrating on the sixes through nines that most people find hardest. Level four moves to two-digit numbers and hands back five extra seconds a problem, and by level seven you are multiplying numbers in the twenties.

The difficulties are twenty seconds a problem on easy, ten on medium and five on hard. Hard with double-digit numbers is a genuinely tight fifteen seconds of mental arithmetic, and the best score for each difficulty is kept separately on your device so there is something to beat.

How to play

  1. Pick Easy, Medium or Hard. That sets the seconds you get per problem.
  2. Type the answer and press Enter.
  3. Five right answers in a row of play clear the level and the numbers get bigger.
  4. A wrong answer or a timeout costs one of your three lives.

Tips

  • Start on easy and climb. The score that matters is the one on the difficulty you can finish.
  • Learn the sixes through nines. Level three is built entirely out of them.
  • On double-digit problems, split the number: 14 x 7 is 70 plus 28.
  • Guess rather than time out. A wrong answer costs the same life, and a guess might land.

Questions

Is this good practice for school?

It drills multiplication facts up to the twenties against a clock, which is exactly the recall that gets tested. It is not a curriculum, just practice.

Why the name?

It is a joke on casualties and a cat. There is nothing violent in the game.
