What Not My Type is
Not My Type is a typing shooter in the spirit of the old typing games many of us learned the keyboard on. Little round invaders float down toward a cannon at the bottom of the screen, and every one of them carries a word. Type the word and the cannon fires one shot per letter. Finish the word and the invader pops.
The game is built in levels. Level one sends a handful of slow invaders with two to four letter words like "cat" and "jam". Each level after that sends more of them, sends them faster, and stretches the words, until late levels are throwing "rhinoceros" and "thunderstorm" at you at a pace that takes real typing to keep up with.
Every invader that reaches the bottom knocks out one of your five shields. Lose all five and the run is over, and the game shows your score, the level you reached, how many words you cleared, your accuracy and your typing speed in words per minute. It is a good way to practise touch typing without it feeling like practice.
The speed shown after a game is game speed, which includes the gaps while you wait for the next invader. For a true reading there is a standard typing test built in: a 30 or 60 second run through common English words, scored the way typing test sites score it, with every five characters counted as a word and only correctly typed words counting toward your speed.

How to play
- Press Enter, or the Start button, to begin.
- Look for the invader closest to the bottom and start typing its word. The first letter locks your cannon on to it.
- Keep typing. Each correct letter fires a shot, and the finished part of the word turns gold.
- Finish the word to destroy the invader and score points. Longer words and higher levels are worth more.
- If you lock on to the wrong one, press Backspace to let go and pick another.
- Clear every invader in a level to earn a bonus and move on to the next, faster level.
Controls
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| Letter keys | Type the words to shoot |
| Backspace | Let go of the current target |
| Esc | Pause or resume |
| Enter | Start or play again |
On a phone or tablet: Tap the board to bring up your phone or tablet keyboard, then type as normal. A real keyboard is much easier, but the game works either way.
Tips
- Always shoot the lowest invader first. A long word near the top can wait; a short one near the bottom cannot.
- Two invaders on screen never start with the same letter, so your first key always picks exactly the one you meant.
- Wrong letters do not cost a shield, but they do lower your accuracy, so a steady rhythm beats frantic mashing.
- Each letter you hit knocks an invader back a little, so finishing a word you have started is usually safer than switching.
- Keep your fingers on the home row. Looking at the keys is the slowest thing you can do in the later levels.
Questions
Is my best score kept?
Yes. The scoreboard under the game shows your high score, the highest level you have reached and your best typing test speed, all kept in your browser on the device you play on. You can hide the how to play panel once you know the game, and it stays hidden next time.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the board to open the keyboard. It is easier with a real keyboard, and the board shrinks to fit above the on-screen one.
Why is my typing test speed different from my game speed?
The game counts only the letters you shoot, over the whole game, including the time spent waiting for invaders. The typing test is continuous text for a fixed time, scored as standard words per minute, so it is the number to compare with other typing tests.
Is it good for learning to type?
It is good practice once you know where the keys are. The early levels are slow and use short words, and the score screen shows your speed and accuracy so you can see yourself improve.
Nothing in this game costs money, and there is no account to make. See the parents' guide for what is in it, or the privacy policy for what we store (almost nothing).
